I was invited to pray on the World Day of Pray on Mar 22, 2020 Sunday 12 noon local time with other Christians. Five topics were suggested. I added three more at the end.
1) The stop of the spread of the virus
I pray for God’s mercy as He watches over the earth. God has the power to calm the storm, call in the rain to wash over this land, and perform miracles of all kinds. If God willing, please exercise your sovereignty over this pandemic. As from a human perspective, the world is at a standstill. We hope we are doing the right things to stop the spread of the virus. However, not every country is equipped with the proper knowledge and methods to cope with this situation. God, please guide us to do what it takes to contain, mitigate, and eradicate this COVID-19 virus.
2) The recovery of those already infected
God, I only saw glimpses of people who are suffering from this infection through TV or social media. Some are gasping for oxygen, some look despondent, some are helpless and lifeless. If God willing, I pray that You will restore them, one by one so that they can experience Your love, and turn a new page in their lives. Once again, they can be strong again and live life to its fullness!
3) Peace for the families who lost loved ones
Families are losing their loved ones due to the virus, many people are affected. Do far, globally over 300,000 people have contracted COVID-19 virus and at least 12,944 have died according to John Hopkins University. As people mourn, Lord, please comfort them in ways only You can do. Shed light in their darkness, listen to their cries with Your compassion, offer them hope in their desperation, uphold them so they will not fall, grant them strength to hold on day after day, and see them through as they rebuild their lives without their loved ones.
4) Restoration of the economies of the world
Thank you, God for giving us wisdom, knowledge and skills to build a healthy world economy. We have seen prosperity in the western world up to the beginning of year 2020. We watched the world equity market in an all-time high. In a matter of four weeks, the US stock market drop 30%, and as of Mar 22, 2020, the sinking trend seems to continue.
Human are made in the image of God. We bear characteristics of our Creator. We have seen our survival schemes progressing and thriving through human civilization. Lord, give us wisdom and tenacity to rise above this economic tsunami. Rise up steadfast leaders, ingenious scientists, capable economists… to steer the world’s economy towards preservation, growth, and harmony.
You love the world You created, You love Your people, You have a plan for us. Lord, may Your name be glorified through our crisis. May Your people turn to You, humble ourselves, seek Your face, and refrain from the human wickedness. As we confess our wrong-doings, our lack of actions, our stubbornness, and our disobedience, may God accept our repentance and grant us forgiveness!
5) Wisdom for the governments who have to manage the outbreak
Lord, we live in societies that are led by earthly leaders. May our leaders turn to God with reverence and awe. May they heed Your teachings and warnings, and seek ways to move in harmony with Your will. Lord, please bring alignment in all levels of governments, across all countries so that leaders are acting towards a common goal in managing the outbreak and controlling the spread of the pandemic. May the world leaders value human lives first and foremost, and put aside their personal power and self-gains.
I also want to pray for this opportunity of awakening of souls:
1) For the willingness to seek the truth
Many places of this world is being locked down, families are staying home… Never before do we have so much time in solitude. May God enable us to grasp this opportunity to be still, and reflect on how we need to lead our lives. Do we want to seek the truth or, listen to half-truths? Where is the truth? Is there an absolute truth? What does the Bible say about the absolute truth? Can the truth set us free? God, challenge us to find out from ourselves by studying the Bible now.
2) For hearts to be opened for the gospel
I pray that God, You will open the eyes of those who are willing to hear more about You, Your love for mankind, Your plan for rescuing us from despair, loneliness, sadness, disappointments, frustrations, helplessness, etc.
God, we cannot see You unless You open our eyes. May You hear our knocking, kindly open the door and welcome us in.
3) For the desire to live a meaningful life knowing we all face unknowns beyond anyone’s control
Jobs, fame, fortune, material possessions… these are wonderful things that bring comfort, pride, and satisfaction, but they don’t last. Human beings are meaning-seekers and meaning-makers. We interpret life events based on our beliefs, values, and perspectives. Our life satisfaction is based on how we interpret and respond to life events. In times of uncertainty like the COVID-19 situation, we need to hold on to something that’s bigger than the economy, the rhetoric of our government leaders, our health care system… What gives us meaning? What meaning does this pandemic bring to us so that we are not crushed by it? What is the silver-lining, if any?
God, have mercy on us, help us to find the true meaning of life, the treasure that You have gifted us so generously. Thank you, God.
